- May I register for an MCTC math class without taking a math placement exam?
- All new students are required to take placement tests before
enrolling in classes unless these tests are waived by a counselor or
advisor. See MCTC Assessment Testing to determine if you need to do this and to learn about MCTC Assessment Testing. Also see the “Math Placement Testing” link to the left for more specific information on math placement testing.
- Do I need to take both College Algebra (MATH 1110) and College Trigonometry (MATH 1120) before enrolling in Calculus 1 (MATH 1180)?
- The prerequisites for Calculus 1 are either completion of College Algebra (MATH 1110) and College Trigonometry (MATH 1120) OR completion of Precalculus (MATH 1125). It is also recommended that you pass these courses with a grade of "C" or higher before attempting to take Math 1180. Note: The prerequisite for College Algebra (MATH 1110) is MATH 0080, or placement. The prerequisite for Precalculus (MATH 1125) is MATH 0080 with a grade of “A”, or placement.
- I have just passed College Algebra (MATH 1110) and plan to eventually take Calculus 1 (MATH 1180). Which course should I take next: College
Trigonometry (MATH 1120) or Precalculus (MATH 1125)?
- If you plan to take calculus and have already passed College Algebra (MATH 1110), then the next course you should take is College Trigonometry (MATH 1120). Precalculus (MATH 1125) is an accelerated precalculus course that covers much of the content of MATH 1110 and most of the content of MATH 1120 in one semester. It is intended for students who have done well in MATH 0080 as an alternate way to prepare for calculus.
- I am planning to transfer to the UM-IT. Which MCTC Math courses should I take before doing so?
- UM-IT transfer plans can be found here. The current UM-IT/MCTC transfer plan can be found here.
- I have other questions about math courses offered at MCTC—who can answer them?
- Other questions concerning MCTC math courses should be directed to Carmen Buhler (612-659-6419).
